Health Issues in Public Opinion Survey Research
in Central and Eastern Europe
Workshop Organized by
This four-day workshop (March 31 – April 3, 2011) takes a social science perspective to the analysis of health issues in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). We will compare the state of affairs in CEE prior to 1989 to the post-communist era, as well as current differences within the region, and between CEE and Western Europe. In practical terms, the workshop is devoted to analyzing objective and subjective indicators of health relying on national and cross-national surveys. We focus on the relationship between social background—including gender, age, education, socio-economic position—and health. This workshop offers students the opportunity to develop and/or expand their own empirical research projects on health related issues in CEE with individual help from the instructors.
The workshop has both substantive and methodological components. Substantively, students will study major theoretical frameworks that social scientists use in health research in CEE. Methodologically, the workshop will introduce students to common measurement instruments for physical and psychological health and their application in two large-scale data sets: the European Social Survey (ESS, 2002-2008) and the Polish Panel Survey, POLPAN 1988-2008. Under the guidance of the instructors, students will engage first-hand in basic analyses of the survey data using the statistical program SPSS.
Instructors will provide students with the reading package, access to the datasets, and to SPSS. Kazimierz M. Slomczynski, Professor at the Sociology and Political Science Departments at OSU, and two specialists from CEE, Dr. Irina Tomescu-Dubrow and Dr. Joshua K. Dubrow from CONSIRT, will provide the training and will assist students with their research questions during the workshop. Upon completion of the workshop, students will receive a Certificate of Attendance. Workshop Organized by The Center for Slavic and East European Studies (CSEES), the Ohio State University, and Cross-National Studies: Interdisciplinary Research and Training Program (CONSIRT), OSU-Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN).
